Hybrid Power Units and Top Systems accelerate growth through acquisition of Smart Grid

Amsterdam / Stadskanaal / Bodegraven, October 23 2024 – Our portfolio companies Hybrid Power Units (HPU) and Top Systems (TS) have acquired industry peer Smart Grid. With the unification of HPU/TS and Smart Grid, the organization takes its first step in the Buy and Build strategy.

Battery-based energy solutions

The energy transition is crucial in addressing climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for future generations. Batteries are a key success factor in this energy transition. With the expertise of Smart Grid, HPU/TS can expand its product offering, allowing the company to serve even the largest projects where no grid connection is available (such as large infrastructure projects) in the new situation.

Buy and Build Strategy

The acquisition of Smart Grid is a significant step in the growth trajectory of HPU/TS, as Smart Grid produces higher-capacity batteries and possesses advanced software, which considerably strengthens the market position in a sector increasingly demanding larger energy capacities and smart management systems.
Holland Capital has been involved as a shareholder since April 2024. They actively support management in the strategic development of the company and aim to help accelerate growth. The goal is to position the battery as a widely adopted zero-emission alternative to fossil energy. By supplying batteries that meet the highest quality standards, we offer solutions to problems such as grid congestion, overcapacity, and the transition to sustainable energy, while also providing an attractive opportunity to respond to volatile energy prices.

Dick de Raad, CTO of HPU: “I have, of course, been following Smart Grid for some time due to my interest in the market. Their product portfolio aligns perfectly with the systems we already have. Through the upcoming collaboration, we will be able to handle any project.”

Joep de Ruyter, CEO of HPU/TS: “I am extremely excited about expanding our range in the high-voltage segment. This is an important step in the further growth and development of the combined companies, and I am particularly looking forward to bringing the expertise of the different teams together and serving Smart Grid’s existing customers well.”
